Search for "graphene motor oil" and you will find bottles of finished oil, engine treatments and a lot of big promises about fuel economy and horsepower. This article sorts out what graphene motor oil actually is, which claims are backed by tests, which are not, and how an oil blender can add graphene to an engine oil and judge the result.
What is graphene motor oil?
Graphene motor oil is a regular engine oil with graphene added, either already blended by the oil company or added later as a treatment. The base oil, viscosity modifiers, detergents, dispersants and anti-wear chemistry are still there. The graphene is one more additive in the package.
The idea comes from a long-known fact: stacked layers of carbon slide over each other easily, which is why graphite has been used as a solid lubricant for a very long time. Graphene layers are far thinner. The theory is that they can sit in the contact zone between metal surfaces and help keep them apart when the oil film is under stress, such as at start-up or under heavy load.
What the research says
Bench and engine studies are mixed but interesting. One recent study tested two graphene engine oil additives in diesel engines and measured small fuel consumption reductions of well under 1% in most conditions (Energies, MDPI, 2025). The authors linked part of the effect to a drop in oil viscosity, not only to graphene itself. In other words, results depend on the whole formulation and on how the test is run.
Claims to be careful with
Be wary of graphene oil claims that promise large fuel savings, extra horsepower, longer drain intervals or "lifetime" protection without saying how they were measured. Also check that any finished oil carries the API, ILSAC or OEM approvals your engine requires, and read your warranty before using an aftermarket treatment.
We hold ourselves to the same standard. Graphene Integrations does not make fuel-economy, oil-life or horsepower claims. We have no measured field data on fuel economy or oil life, so we do not claim it.
What our tests show
The Graphene Motor Oil Additive uses the same chemistry as our graphene lubricant additive. In independent testing at Univar's Houston lab, that additive delivered up to 42% less wear and a 26% higher weld load compared with the lubricant without graphene.
- Wear is measured with a four-ball test such as ASTM D4172: three steel balls are held in the oil while a fourth is turned against them, and the scars are measured. A smaller scar means better protection.
- Weld load is the load at which the balls seize, measured with an extreme-pressure method such as ASTM D2783. Higher is better.
These are bench tests. They are useful for comparing formulas side by side, but they are not engine tests and do not predict fuel economy or engine life on their own.
How the Graphene Motor Oil Additive is used
The additive is graphene integrated into Sylfat™ tall oil fatty acid (Kraton). The graphene is already dispersed in that oil-compatible carrier, so it pours into a finished motor oil or into your own additive package with the equipment you already run.
- For: oil blenders, private-label oil programs, and fleet, marine and small-engine oil programs.
- Base oils: made for gasoline and diesel engine oils; other carriers on request.
- Dose: typically 1% to 7% by weight, depending on the job. We suggest a starting treat rate for each trial.
- Mixing: shake the container, weigh the dose, blend at your normal temperature and time.
- Made in the USA in Charlotte, NC. Patent pending. No carbon black. Never sold as a powder.
What is a graphene additive?
A graphene additive is a product that brings graphene into another material at a low dose, the way a pigment or a reinforcing filler does. The graphene is the active part. The carrier around it decides whether it mixes into your product cleanly.
Why a pre-dispersed liquid beats powder. Dry graphene powder is light and dusty, hard to wet out, and its flakes tend to clump back together. Clumps act like defects, so a powder can make a product worse instead of better. Our graphene additives are supplied as liquids with the flakes already separated in a carrier matched to your system, so they mix in with the equipment you already run and there is no fine dust to manage. We never sell powder.
Dosing. Our graphene additives are typically used at 1% to 7% by weight, depending on the job. More is not automatically better, so a trial should bracket two or three doses.
Trialing. Compare against a baseline you already make, change only the additive dose, and run the tests your customers use. Our guide on how to run a graphene additive trial and our guide to choosing a graphene additive go into more detail.
How a blender should evaluate it
- Choose a baseline oil you make and know well.
- Blend two or three treat rates within 1% to 7%. More is not automatically better.
- Check appearance, viscosity and storage stability first.
- Run the same four-ball wear and EP tests on treated and untreated oil, plus anything your specifications require.
- Decide on the data, then scale up.

Frequently asked questions
Does graphene motor oil really work?
Graphene can reduce wear in bench tests. Our lubricant chemistry gave up to 42% less wear and a 26% higher weld load in independent testing. Engine results depend on the full oil formulation.
Does graphene motor oil improve fuel economy?
We do not make fuel-economy claims. We have no measured field data on fuel economy or oil life.
What is the carrier in the Graphene Motor Oil Additive?
Graphene integrated into Sylfat™ tall oil fatty acid (Kraton), supplied pre-mixed so it pours into finished oil or an additive package.
How much do I add?
Typically 1% to 7% by weight, depending on the job. We suggest a starting treat rate for each trial.
Can I buy it online?
