New Graphene Gear Oil Additive Targets Heavily Loaded Gears in Industrial and Automotive Drives

Press release

The additive is designed for meshing gear teeth under high contact pressure, where a higher weld load can matter most.

— Graphene Integrations today introduced its Graphene Gear Oil Additive for industrial and automotive gear oils. It is built for the part of a machine where lubricant works hardest: gear teeth that mesh under high contact pressure in differentials, gearboxes, final drives and industrial gear drives.

Why weld load matters in gears

When a gear oil film breaks down under load, metal surfaces can scuff and seize. The graphene lubricant additive behind this product raised weld load by 26% and reduced wear by up to 42% in independent testing at Univar's Houston lab. Those are four-ball style lab measures of how much load a lubricant can carry before the test surfaces weld together, and how much wear occurs along the way. Thin graphene layers are known for sliding easily over one another, which can help keep loaded surfaces apart.

“Gears are where you find out fast whether a lubricant can take the load. We'd rather show a formulator a 26% higher weld load from an independent lab than promise them anything we haven't measured.”

Blend it into the gear oil you already make

The graphene arrives pre-mixed in an oil-based carrier, graphene integrated into oleic acid and monomer, with other base oils available on request. Formulators blend it into a finished gear oil or transmission lubricant at 1% to 7% by weight, depending on the job, then test it against their current product. Results depend on the base oil and additive package, so every evaluation is run in the customer's own formulation.

Availability

The additive is offered in 32 fl oz bottles, 1 gallon jugs and 5 gallon pails, with bulk quantities on request, and a technical data sheet is available. It is patent pending, made in the USA and contains no carbon black. Graphene is never supplied as a dry powder.

About Graphene Integrations

Graphene Integrations, formerly Graphene America, is a US graphene manufacturer based in Charlotte, NC. The company makes graphene and supplies it pre-mixed in water, solvents, resins and oils, never as a dry powder, so manufacturers can add it to products and processes they already run. Its products are patent pending and made in the USA. Learn more about Graphene Integrations.
